Altho irrelevent to the Truth, here are some facts and experiences about me. - Carl inWis [my signature]
The History or Story Behind My Site
Carl [Jimmy] grew up in northern Ill. in the Elgin area along the Fox River in the 30s.
We were poor like most folk after the Crash of '29, so I had to improvise toys and activities. Living in village and farm and walking to school, I loved the outdoors.
For a time an air mechanic and cabinetmaker lived with us so I learned some woodworking. In highschool my science teacher had built a reflecting telescope and got me interested in optics.
Being a loner, I haunted the Elgin library and read half the books in the juvenile section and went on to read many adult science books before I was fifteen. Unfortunately I abored math. The result was I could explain scientific theory and use it, but not do the math. I flunked college calculus-1 and gave it up.
Christmas was rescued by dad's older brother in Chicago who sent up a big box of gifts each year. One year I got a Chemcraft set that put me years ahead of my class when I got to high school.
While at U of Wisconsin, I purchased a 6" telescope mirror kit and learned lens grinding and polishing. I still haven't tried to "figure" the exact parabolic curve for it. I have made many lenses and spherical mirrors. Also learned to project images of the sun with a small refracting telescope.
